Membership Development Chair

Job Description

The Club Membership Chair is responsible for leading the club’s membership growth, engagement, and retention efforts. This role helps strengthen the club by attracting qualified new members, supporting current member satisfaction and involvement, and ensuring that membership processes are conducted professionally and in accordance with Rotary guidelines, club bylaws, and club policies.

The Membership Chair works closely with the Club President, Board of Directors, and club members to build a vibrant, diverse, and active Rotary membership.

Primary Responsibilities

Membership Recruitment & Growth

  • Develop and implement a yearly membership action plan focused on recruitment, engagement, and retention.
  • Promote membership growth by identifying and recruiting qualified prospective members from the community.
  • Educate club members on effective ways to invite, attract, and sponsor new members.
  • Encourage diversity in professions, backgrounds, ages, and community representation within the club.
  • Conduct classification surveys to identify opportunities for balanced and expanded membership classifications.

Membership Applications & Screening

  • Receive, review, and process membership proposals and applications.
  • Thoroughly investigate the character, business reputation, community involvement, and eligibility of prospective members.
  • Conduct interviews or orientation meetings with prospective members as appropriate.
  • Present membership recommendations and findings to the Board of Directors for approval.
  • Ensure all membership procedures follow club bylaws, club policies, and Rotary International guidelines.

Member Orientation & Education

  • Coordinate new member orientation and onboarding.
  • Provide education regarding Rotary’s mission, history, programs, values, and expectations of membership.
  • Help new members become actively involved in committees, service projects, meetings, and club activities.
  • Encourage mentorship opportunities between existing and new members.

Membership Retention & Engagement

  • Develop strategies to improve member satisfaction and long-term retention.
  • Conduct club assessments and member feedback surveys to identify areas for improvement.
  • Evaluate club meetings, projects, events, and fellowship opportunities to ensure the club provides value and engagement for members.
  • Monitor attendance and participation trends and help reconnect inactive members.
  • Promote fellowship and inclusion throughout the club.
  • Assist prospective and new members in understanding the privileges and responsibilities of Rotary membership.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Work closely with club leadership and committee chairs to support membership growth initiatives.
  • Report membership updates, trends, and recommendations to the Board of Directors.
  • Coordinate membership recognition efforts and celebrate member milestones when appropriate.
  • Attend district membership seminars or training sessions as requested.
