Peter Sherris will be speaking about: Adapting Family-based Agriculture to Climate Change Through Youth Leadership, in Rabinal Guatemala

Rotary Oakland has acted as international sponsor of three global grants yearly for several years and contributed to others.  Peter Sherris has acted as international sponsor on six, has advised on many others and is a past president.  The goal is to help farmers and their households in Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala improve their economic, nutritional and future welfare by building capacity in sustainable agriculture techniques to better adapt to climate change’s profound impact on farm productivity and net income.

Tina Fernandez Steckler will be speaking about: HERS Breast Cancer Foundation

HERS Breast Cancer Foundation strives every day to bring HERS – Hope, Empowerment, Renewal, and Support — to our patients.  We do this by offering products and services in a setting that is welcoming and compassionate.  Our Program Stores are truly “a soft place to fall.”

Tina Fernandez Steckler is the Executive Director of HERS the Breast Cancer Foundation.  October is breast cancer awareness month and Tina will discuss the work of HERS as well as one of their major fundraisers the walk run event.

Dr. Richard S. Godfrey will be speaking about:

This presentation will focus on a three and a half year Area 3 project of screening and treating HPV related Cervical Cancer.  The current WHO plan for global elimination of Cervical Cancer and related programs will be shared.  A simplified explanation of new technology and treatment methods will be presented.

Dr. Richard S. Godfrey is a general surgeon and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Washington Hospital, Highland Hospital, and San Leandro Hospital.  He received his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years.  Richard is the executive director of the East Bay Foundation Graduate Medical Education, Treasurer – founding board member LEAF – Local Ecology and Agriculture Fremont. Author and writer first novel – The End of the Race current project – non fiction study of medicine and non profits in Kenya.  Board member of Healing Muses, a non profit that supports music as a healing modality in the hospital setting, and Park Advisory Council East Bay Regional Park District.

Alan Frank will be speaking about: History of how the Niles Canyon Railroad and Livermore Emerged

Alan Frank is a retired physicist from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory living in Livermore and a long time Rotarian in the Livermore Club.  He was the curator and historian for the Niles Canyon Railroad, managed the move and restoration of the Sunol Depot.  He was responsible for the historical information resulting in listing on the National Register of Historic Places.  Subsequently he was asked by the City of Livermore to be the historic consultant for the move & refurbishment of the Livermore Depot. He has since published two books, “Depot – A history of the railroad in Livermore” and “Parallel Paths – A Railroad History of Livermore.”  Copies of both books are available from lulu.com, proceeds help support the Livermore Heritage Guild.
