Niles Rotary Vocabulary List

Club Vocabulary:

  1. Club Administration Director – An elected, voting Niles Rotary Board member that handles all administrative aspects of club operations
  2. COGS – (Club Operations Group Service) Primarily Red Badge newer members and Blue Badge members in their first years of membership, they are assigned club meeting setup, admin and takedown duties by the club Sgt. at Arms each week
  3. Community Service Director – An elected, voting Niles Rotary Board member that handles all local service projects
  4. Interact Clubs – Rotary for people ages 12-18 usually found in High Schools and learn about the world through service projects and activities. Each of our High Schools has an Interact Club and Niles supports Washington High School, Fremont Christian and Robertson High School. Participates in the Speech Contest, Student Scholarship’s and RYLA participation
  5. International Director – An elected, voting Niles Rotary Board member that handles the club’s international projects, fundraising and sits on the Area 3 International Committee
  6. Mentor – a Niles Rotarian who has been assigned to a new Red Badger of the club to help them attain their Blue Badge status, help them understand the organization of Rotary both at a local, district and global level
  7. MPMT – Mentor Program Management Team
  8. Niles Rotary Foundation – Different from the Rotary Foundation (See #33 below), this is Niles Rotary’s 501(c)3 foundation through which our annual Elimination Raffle fundraiser is managed to provide grants to local charities and service projects
  9. The Pinion – This is the name of Niles Rotary’s monthly newsletter sent via email
  10. PP – Past President
  11. Red Badger – Wearing a Rotary red badge signifying a recently inducted Niles Rotarian, they are working their way through their Blue Badge requirements and learning about how the club and Rotary function. They are fully active members, the red badge signifies newness to Rotary and invites all club members to reach out and support them
  12. Elimination Raffle – A term the club uses for its annual fundraiser also known as The Elimination Raffle. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and it is always in early spring
  13. Rotaract Clubs – Rotary for young people ages 18-30. These clubs train participants to organize service activities, develop leadership skills, and socialize.  Niles Rotary is a sponsor of the Rotaract Club of Greater Fremont.
  14. Rotary Anniversary – this is the date you were inducted into the club
  15. RYLA – (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) An annual leadership camp for Interactors and other students, Niles Rotary sponsors students from each of our three Interact clubs
  16. Social Change – Established in 2017-2018, this is Niles Rotary’s social event outreach to Rotaractors wishing to transition to Rotary as well as young professionals that are interested in giving back through service and may know little or nothing about Rotary
  17. Sponsor – a Niles Rotarian who has brought a new member to the Niles Rotary Club
  18. Vocational – An appointed, non-voting member of the Niles Rotary Board that handles projects and programs highlighting Rotary’s role in promoting business networking and outreach to students
  19. Youth Service Director– An elected, voting member of the Niles Rotary Board that handles our interaction with our three Interact Clubs

Area 3 Vocabulary:

  1. Area 3 – This is the Fremont-Newark-Union City Rotary geographical Area in which Niles Rotary is located along with 5 other clubs (Fremont, Fremont Morning, FUN Sunset, Mission San Jose, and Newark)
  2. Hot, Hot, Hot Chili Pepper Challenge – Area 3 fundraiser raising funds for designated local charities picked by the Area 3 fundraising committee. This fundraiser is a social media fundraiser first started and evolved from The Chili Festival.
  3. WCSC – World Community Service Committee – is made up of one representative from each club in Area 3 and helps to determine the usage of the clubs DDF for International Projects

District Vocabulary:

  1. ADG/Area District Governor – Each of the 8 geographic Areas in District 5170 has an Area District Governor (ADG) that oversees those clubs in their area
  2. DDF – Designated District Funds – A portion of those funds contributed to the Rotary Foundation by each Rotary Club in District 5170 that are returned to the contributing club each Rotary year to assist in funding District and Global grant projects of the club’s choosing
  3. District 5170 – Niles Rotary is one of 54 clubs in District 5170, the geographical region encompassing Alameda, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Mateo and San Benito counties.
  4. District Conference – This is an annual conference put on by our District 5170
  5. DG/District Governor – Title of the person who heads up our District 5170
  6. District Training Assembly – Annual Meeting conducted by our District 5170 for Club Leadership Training
  7. E-clubs – clubs that connect through the internet. Locally we have the e-club of Silicon Valley.
  8. PDG – Past District Governor
  9. PETS – President Elect Training Seminar is an annual training seminar for those incoming club presidents to learn about leading their club successfully
  10. Pre-Pets – This is an annual seminar held before PETS to get the Club President-Elects ready for their formal training seminar

Rotary International Vocabulary:

  1. Avenue of Service – Refers to the 5 areas of Rotary Service (Vocational, International, Community Service, Youth Services, Club Service). An Avenues of Service District training is conducted annually to introduce Rotarians to these 5 areas of service.
  2. Global Grant – International Grant which is submitted to Rotary International for approval and funding for an International Project
  3. PRIP – Past Rotary International President
  4. The Rotary Foundation – Rotary International’s 501(c)3 fundraising arm that supports international humanitarian efforts in 6 major focus areas plus Rotary’s single most ambitious effort, the eradication of polio worldwide.
  5. Rotary International – It’s a leadership organization. Founded in 1905, Rotary is the world’s oldest and largest humanitarian organization.  Niles Rotary is one of over 36,000 clubs worldwide.  We’re made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders.  We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships, and through that, we’re able to get things done in this community.
  6. Rotary International Convention – This is a convention held annually in a different international city where all Rotarians have to chance to learns, socialize and make connections
  7. Rotary International President – Carrying the status of a head of state, leads the Rotary International organization and Board of Directors, establishes the annual Rotary theme and priorities for the Rotary year
  8. Zone – Rotary is made up of 34 Zones, then Districts, then Areas. We are in Zone 25/26, District 5170 and Area 3

Foundation Vocabulary:

  1. EREY – The Every Rotarian Every Yearinitiative asks every Rotarian to support The Rotary Foundation every year.  Niles Rotary strives to achieve Every Rotarian Every Year by asking each club member to contribute some amount to the Rotary Foundation. While the club standard over the years has been a Double Sustainer ($200) per member, any amount is encouraged and appreciated
  2. The Rotary Foundation – Rotary International’s 501(c)3 fundraising arm that supports international humanitarian efforts in 6 major focus areas plus Rotary’s single most ambitious effort, the eradication of polio worldwide.
  3. Levels of donation and contributions:
    1. Sustainer – $100/year

  18. Inner Wheel – Started by a wife of a Rotarian in 1924, the Inner Wheel Club is one of the largest women’s service voluntary organizations in the world. The Niles Fremont Inner Wheel Club has friends of Rotarians and a Nile Rotary Club member’s husband as a member.
