As we all know, this year’s Rotary International theme is “Rotary Connects the World”. Did Rotary International President Mark Daniel Maloney have a crystal ball when he chose this theme? Because there have been few times, if any, in recent memory when staying connected has carried such significance as it does now.
More than 400 years ago, the English poet John Donne wrote, “No man is an island.” So very true. We do poorly in isolation and need to be part of a community to thrive. While each of us is an individual, we all are part of a greater whole. And it is from that greater whole that we gain our greatest strength.
People connect in so many ways – through family, friendships, faith, business, social activities, sports, school; the list goes on and on. As Rotarians, and Niles Rotarians in particular, we have a special connection, embodied in the four way test and the sense of fellowship we embrace. Let’s not lose sight of this during these unusual and, for most, trying times. We all are here for each other. So feel free to go to our website, pull up the roster, and just give a fellow member a call, or send a text or email. Reach out, and be there when someone reaches out to you.
If you can, attend our weekly meetings on-line. We tried this out last week and, although there were a few glitches that we’ll have to iron out, for the most part the meeting was a huge success! Most impressive of all, 76 people attended, including one visiting Rotarian (Mary Lynn’s sister Carol Geddes), and five guests (Sandi Pantages’ husband Dick, Harry’s lovely fiancée Ella, Tracy Salvato’s granddaughter Nevaeh, Dirk’s dog Lexxie, and Steven Lloyd’s cousin, Neneva Pejovic from Montenegro). We will continue to have these virtual meetings as long as necessary, and will work to make them flow as smoothly as possible and to provide as close to a “normal” meeting as we can. In fact, we intend eventually to be able to incorporate one of our favorite parts of the meeting — SINGING!!
Yes…Rotary does connect the world. And by all of us in our club staying connected, we will remain NILES STRONG!!
